Invisalign for Adults — What to Expect in 2026

More adults are straightening their teeth than ever before. If you've been thinking about Invisalign but have questions about how it works, how long it takes, or whether it's worth the investment, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Why Are So Many Adults Choosing Invisalign?

You might think braces are just for teenagers. In reality, about one in three orthodontic patients today is an adult. And the majority of those adults are choosing clear aligners over traditional brackets and wires.

The reasons are practical. Clear aligners are nearly invisible, which matters when you're in meetings, on video calls, or presenting to clients. They're removable, so you can eat whatever you want and brush your teeth normally. And modern Invisalign technology can treat cases that would have required metal braces just a few years ago.

As a Diamond Invisalign Provider with over 1,500 completed cases, I can tell you that the technology has improved dramatically. The aligners are thinner, the treatment planning software (ClinCheck) is more precise, and the results are more predictable than ever.

What Does the Invisalign Process Look Like?

Here's what happens from your first visit to your final result. No surprises — just a clear plan from start to finish.

Step 1: Smile Assessment and Digital Scan

Your first appointment takes about 30 minutes. We'll talk about your goals — what you want to change about your smile, any bite issues you've noticed, and your timeline. Then we take a digital scan of your teeth using the iTero scanner. There are no goopy impressions — just a small wand that captures a 3D model of your teeth in a few minutes.

Step 2: Your Custom Treatment Plan

Using your digital scan, I build your treatment plan in ClinCheck software. This lets me show you a simulation of how your teeth will move at each stage of treatment — and what your final result will look like. You'll see your future smile before you commit to anything.

Step 3: Aligners Arrive

Invisalign fabricates your custom aligners at their facility. This usually takes about two weeks. When they arrive, we'll fit your first set, place any attachment buttons (small tooth-colored bumps that help certain teeth move), and make sure everything is comfortable.

Step 4: Wear Your Aligners

You'll wear each set of aligners for one to two weeks, then switch to the next set. The key rule: wear them 20 to 22 hours per day. Take them out to eat, drink anything besides water, and brush your teeth. That's it.

Step 5: Progress Checkups

We'll see you every six to eight weeks to check your progress, hand you your next batch of aligners, and make any adjustments. These visits are quick — usually 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 6: Retainers

When treatment is complete, you'll wear retainers to keep your teeth in their new position. Most adults wear a retainer at night long-term. This is the step people skip — and then wonder why their teeth shift back.

How Long Does Invisalign Take for Adults?

Most adult Invisalign cases at our practice take 12 to 18 months. Mild crowding or spacing issues can be resolved in as few as 6 months. More complex cases involving bite correction may take up to 24 months.

Your timeline depends on the complexity of your case, how consistently you wear your aligners, and whether any refinement trays are needed at the end. I'll give you a realistic estimate at your consultation — not an optimistic guess.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

You'll feel pressure when you switch to a new set of aligners. Most patients describe it as tightness, not pain. It usually lasts one to two days and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. After the first few sets, most people barely notice the transition.

The attachment buttons can feel a little rough against your cheeks at first. Dental wax helps if that bothers you, but most patients get used to them within a week.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

At Summit Ridge Dental, Invisalign for adults typically ranges from $4,500 to $7,000 depending on case complexity. That's comparable to traditional braces — and in some cases, the same price.

Your cost depends on how many aligners you need, whether your case involves bite correction, and your insurance coverage. Many dental plans cover Invisalign the same way they cover braces, with orthodontic benefits typically covering $1,000 to $2,500.

We also offer monthly payment plans through CareCredit and Lending Club, and our Summit Savings Plan includes a 15% discount on treatment for members without insurance.

Can Invisalign Fix My Specific Issue?

Invisalign treats a wider range of issues than most people realize. Here's what it can address:

  • Crowding — overlapping or twisted teeth
  • Spacing — gaps between teeth
  • Overbite — upper teeth overlapping lower teeth too much
  • Underbite — lower teeth sitting in front of upper teeth
  • Crossbite — some upper teeth sitting inside lower teeth
  • Open bite — front teeth that don't touch when you bite down

Cases that Invisalign may not be ideal for include severe skeletal jaw discrepancies, significant tooth rotation (more than 20 degrees), and situations requiring vertical tooth movement. For those cases, I'll be straightforward about whether a different approach would serve you better.

Invisalign vs Braces: Why Most Adults Prefer Aligners

The choice usually comes down to visibility and lifestyle. Clear aligners let you straighten your teeth without anyone noticing. You can remove them for important events, you can eat anything you want, and oral hygiene is simple since you brush and floss normally.

Traditional braces can be slightly faster for certain complex movements and don't require the discipline of wearing aligners 22 hours a day. But for the vast majority of adult cases, Invisalign delivers equivalent results with significantly more convenience.

Tips From 1,500+ Invisalign Cases

After treating over 1,500 patients with Invisalign, here are the practical tips I share with every new patient:

  • Switch aligners at bedtime. The first few hours with a new tray feel the tightest. Sleep through it.
  • Keep a travel toothbrush with you. You'll need to brush before putting aligners back in after meals.
  • Use your chewies. Biting on the chewies we give you for 5 minutes after inserting a new tray helps seat aligners properly.
  • Don't skip trays. Wearing each tray for the full recommended time prevents tracking issues later.
  • Clean your aligners daily. Rinse them when you remove them. Soak them in Invisalign cleaning crystals or a denture cleaner once a day.

Why Choose Summit Ridge Dental for Invisalign?

Not all Invisalign providers have the same experience. Invisalign designates providers in tiers based on case volume — and Summit Ridge Dental is a Diamond Provider, which means we complete a high number of cases every year. That experience translates directly into better treatment planning, fewer refinements, and more predictable results.

We offer Invisalign at our Tempe and Gilbert offices, with consultations available six days a week including Saturdays. Your smile assessment is complimentary and includes a digital scan and treatment simulation.
