Dental Anxiety — How We Help Nervous Patients Feel Comfortable

If the thought of a dental appointment makes your palms sweat, your heart race, or your mind immediately jump to excuses for canceling — we want you to know that this is completely normal, and we're set up to help. At Summit Ridge Dental, anxious patients aren't an afterthought. Gentle care is built into everything we do.

You're Not Alone

Research suggests roughly one in three adults experiences some level of dental anxiety. For about 12%, the fear is severe enough to be classified as dental phobia — a level of anxiety that leads to avoiding the dentist entirely, sometimes for years.

Dental anxiety often comes from a bad experience in the past, a fear of needles or drills, feeling out of control in the dental chair, embarrassment about the condition of your teeth, or a general sensitivity to medical environments.

Whatever the cause, it's valid. And it doesn't have to keep you from getting the care you need.

How We Help Anxious Patients

Dr. Maria Vasquez has built her approach around patients who need a gentler experience. She's known for her patience, her calm demeanor, and her ability to put nervous patients at ease. Here's what you can expect at Summit Ridge Dental:

Tell us before you arrive. When you call to book, let us know about your anxiety. We'll flag your chart so every team member — from the front desk to the hygienist to the dentist — is prepared to adjust their approach.

Go at your pace. We never rush. If you need a break, raise your hand and we stop. No questions, no judgment, no pressure. You are in control the entire time.

Know before we touch. We explain every instrument and every step before it happens. No surprises. You'll know exactly what's coming and why.

A stop signal. We agree on a hand signal before we start. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, you raise your hand and everything stops immediately. Having this control dramatically reduces anxiety for most patients.

Comfort amenities. Noise-canceling headphones, warm blankets, neck pillows, and a calm environment all contribute to a more comfortable experience.

Sedation Options for Anxious Patients

When non-medical comfort measures aren't enough, sedation dentistry provides an additional layer of relaxation:

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the lightest option. You breathe it through a small mask, feel calm and floaty within minutes, and the effects wear off in about five minutes. You can drive yourself home. Available for any procedure, including cleanings. Learn more about nitrous oxide.

Oral sedation is a prescription pill taken before your appointment. You'll feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, with little memory of the procedure afterward. You'll need a driver. Best for more involved procedures or severe anxiety. Learn more about sedation dentistry.

Both options are safe and widely used. Your dentist will help you decide which level is right for your situation.

"I didn't go to a dentist for over six years because of my anxiety. Dr. Vasquez was the first dentist who actually listened when I told her I was scared. She explained everything, let me take breaks, and never made me feel embarrassed. I'm finally back on track."

Haven't Been to the Dentist in Years?

We see patients every week who haven't been to a dentist in 5, 10, sometimes 15+ years. Many are embarrassed about the state of their teeth. Here's what we want you to know:

We will not judge you. Our job is to help you move forward, not look back. We've seen everything, and nothing shocks us.

We start gentle. Your first appointment is just an exam and conversation. We look at what's going on, explain what we find, and build a treatment plan together. There's no pressure to do everything at once.

We work at your pace. If you need to spread treatment over several visits to stay comfortable, that's what we do. One step at a time is a perfectly valid approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just tell us — when you call to book, at check-in, or when you sit down. We hear this every day and are glad when patients share so we can adjust our approach. You can also mention it on the new patient form.

Yes. Nitrous oxide is available for any procedure, including routine cleanings. Oral sedation can also be arranged for cleanings if needed. No procedure is too small for sedation if it helps you get the care you need.

You are welcome here, and we will not judge you. Many patients come to us after years away. We start with a gentle exam, explain what we find, and build a plan that works with your comfort level — one step at a time.

Very common. About 36% of adults experience dental anxiety, and around 12% have severe dental phobia. It's one of the most common reasons people avoid dental care.
