What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, infection, or trauma to the teeth, gums, or jaw that requires immediate treatment. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, call us — we will help you assess the urgency.

Common dental emergencies we treat every week at Summit Ridge Dental include:

Severe toothache: Intense, persistent pain — especially when accompanied by swelling, fever, or sensitivity to heat — often indicates an infection or abscess. Do not wait for it to resolve on its own. An untreated tooth infection can spread to surrounding tissue and become a serious health risk.

Knocked-out tooth: A permanent tooth that has been completely knocked out can sometimes be saved if you act quickly. Pick up the tooth by the crown, rinse gently, and try to reinsert it. If you cannot, keep it in milk and get to our office within 30 minutes.

Broken or cracked tooth: A cracked or fractured tooth can expose the nerve and cause severe pain. Rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and call us immediately.

Lost crown or filling: A missing crown or filling exposes the underlying tooth to bacteria and sensitivity. Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum as a temporary cover and schedule a same-day appointment.

Abscess or facial swelling: An abscess is a pocket of infection that can cause swelling in the face, jaw, or neck. This requires urgent treatment — call us or go to the ER if swelling is severe or affecting your breathing or swallowing.

Uncontrolled bleeding: Bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure needs immediate attention.

Trauma to the mouth or jaw: Sports injuries, falls, or accidents that damage teeth, gums, or jaw structures. Apply a cold compress and call us.

What to Do Before You Get to Our Office

While you are on the way to Summit Ridge Dental, here are some first-aid steps:

For tooth pain: Rinse with warm salt water. Take ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. Avoid aspirin directly on the gum — it can burn the tissue. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.

For a knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown only. Rinse gently without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk, saline, or between your cheek and gum. Time matters — get to us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

For a broken tooth: Rinse with warm water. Save any broken pieces. Apply gauze to any bleeding area. Cold compress on the cheek. Call us immediately.

For a lost crown: If possible, slip the crown back over the tooth using denture adhesive or toothpaste to hold it temporarily. Do not use superglue. Call for a same-day appointment.

For swelling: Apply a cold compress. If the swelling is severe, rapidly worsening, or affecting breathing, go to the emergency room first. Call us after you are stabilized — we will handle the dental follow-up.

"I cracked a molar on a Saturday morning and called Summit Ridge in a panic. They got me into the Gilbert office within two hours. Dr. Vasquez was calm, reassuring, and had me out of pain in no time. A temporary crown was placed and I was eating dinner that night. Cannot recommend them enough for emergencies."

Emergency Dental FAQs

Yes. We hold emergency time slots every day at all three locations, including Saturdays. Call and we will get you in as quickly as possible — usually the same day.

Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently without scrubbing. Try to reinsert it in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk and get to our office within 30 minutes. Speed is critical for the best chance of saving the tooth.

An emergency exam and X-rays typically cost $75 to $150. Treatment costs depend on what is needed. We accept most dental insurance and offer CareCredit financing — we will never let cost delay urgent care.

A severe toothache with swelling, fever, or sensitivity to heat can indicate an infection requiring prompt treatment. Mild, intermittent tooth sensitivity may not be urgent — but persistent pain should always be evaluated. Call us and we will help you determine the urgency.

Emergencies include severe tooth pain, a knocked-out or loose tooth, a cracked or broken tooth, lost crown or filling, abscess or facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, and mouth or jaw trauma. When in doubt, call — we will advise you.

We recommend calling ahead so we can prepare for your arrival and minimize wait time. But if you are in severe pain and cannot call, come directly to the nearest office. We will do our best to accommodate you.
